BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1936 in Nîmes, he was trained at the School of Fine Arts in Montpellier and Paris.
Claude Viallat is one of the founders of the supports/surfaces movement, which questions the traditional supports of painting. His works are presented as the products of a violent and radical break with traditional art.

The painting now represents only its own materiality, that is, the canvas freed from its frame, its pigment, its form.
Playing with materials, the artist confronts refined textiles, sometimes satin, which resonate with burlap, military tarps and other materials.
This variety of supports inaugurates a modification of their use: the fabric is subjected to the folding, the crumpling, the rolling up, the collage... where the artist intervenes by processes other than painting: burns, stamps, dye.
Freeing himself from the limits of art, Claude Viallat seems inhabited by an intoxication of infinite expansion.
